Foreword

The purpose of the present work is to supply the need for a complete treaties of the modern Steel Square, that wonder-working tool, a superior knowledge of which has enable the American artisans to surpass his fellow workman of all other countries in the attainment of the highest standard of skills.

This is the first attempt at supplying the demand for a complete and systematic treaties on the subject.  The fundamental principles of the square are herein given in the plain language, with explanatory illustrations, and so methodically arranged that every workman who makes use of the square can have easy access to such knowledge of its use as he may at any time require.
