Which came first.. the router or the jig? OMG what if we cut a Windsor seat and it is not precisely the same as the other one in the set? Let's get out our laser contour measure and double check. Better check those spindle holes with a set of Starrett taper gauges. The problem is marketing. Ya gotta have new machines all the time. And new tools that do the same thing that old tools did... but they have to have all kindsa geegaws n spiffythings n flyinwheelies n atomic cutters. And do this all to thousands of an inch tolerance. That's why we invented composite processed wood products... dang thing gotta be stable! No more wood movement. I mean... how can you measure to thousands of an inch if the dangnabit stuff insists on expanding n contractin? Well hell, just make the whole thing out of stainless steel. At least then we can accurately predict expansion and contraction. I say... Throw away your feeler gauges! Toss those micrometers! Give away your dial calipers! Free yourself of the tyranny of precision, divest yourself of the marketing ploys of yellow running dog capitalist R&D men! Stand up for your rights! Eyeball the iron set on that plane, freehand grind that bevel, handshave that curve and chisel that mortise with a mallet! Are we Galoots or are we mice? Curmudgeonly yours, January 2007 |
