Making a Ram Head saw handle by Frank Brickhouse

Layout for sawing configuration.

10 inch band saw with scroll blade and a hand held scroll saw to remove
excess stock.  I always saw to the layout line. Do not cut into the layout line.

Oscillating spindle sander and a 1 inch belt sander to remove
saw marks and layout line.

Mark a center line and layout line to establish the necessary contours.
This is not a true radius.

Tools necessary for me to create the handle contours and ram’s head carving.  I removed excess stock from contours by using a pocket knife working between the center line and layout line.  Do not over cut.  Final finish clamp handle in vise and use scrap wood both sides to prevent vise damage.  Tear emery cloth to desired width. Hold emery cloth ends like a shoeshine cloth.  Sand back and forth with force watching the center line and layout line.  This is a give and take method.  Remember you are not forming a true radius.  The carving is another subject and I dare not go there.  I do recommend patience, sharp cutters, comfortable chair, leather apron, band-aids and no foul language.
