Now it is time to radius that edge. I do that on the Arkansas stone because it has to be done pretty carefully. I rock the tool on every stroke across the stone so it will make a radius as seen in the next picture.
When the radius is complete it will look like this. You can still see a little of the wire edge on the cutting edge of the wing. That means it is time to start using the slips
A slip is a stone which has a knife edge on one side and a radius on the other. The knife edge is the part of tool to use here. It puts a slight back bevel on the inside of the wing, and it sharpens the inside edge of the radius. This one is an India slip. It is slightly coarser than the Arkansas slip I will finish with.
The Arkansas slip is shown so that you can see the knife edge. I finish using this slip on the inside of the wings. |
