Panel Saw 7

Early saw made by William McNiece.  To date - 06/15/2007 - I have seen very few saws made by William McNiece.  In my perception, these saws are rare.

Catalog:  Not Available

Model:  The saw has number 7 under the maker's stamp.

Description:   The length of the blade is 16" and this type of saws were usually called Panel Saw.  The Blade is dark colored but not rusty; maker stamp is very clear; nib is present; blade is straight.  The TPI is 10.   The handle is made of apple and is in fairly good condition.  Lower horn of handle has about 1/8" missing from abrasion; top horn is in good condition.

One nut shows evidence of tightening; other two remain undisturbed as shown by original sanding marks. Label screw is countersunk and flush with flat countersunk screws and split nut.  It is a label screw design patented by F. Washbourne, New York, N.Y., patent 72,766 - 12/31/1867.

Production Date: c. 1867 or later

The type of Label Screw and split nuts suggest that the saw was made sometime after 1867 and before 1869, when the new screw type was introduced by Daniel T. Munger, Waterbury, CT - Patent 98,180 - 12/21/1869.  However, the 1869 date is pure speculation since it is possible that McNiece continued using old design screws much longer.

Notice an interesting use of superscript in a name.  The maker name is stamped very deeply.  The remaining words are not as deep, but readable.
