Handsaw by C. & W. C. Richardson - provided by Fred Peak

1 of 3

The saw presented here is one of the rarest saws I have seen.  I fact, I only know about two saws of this kind in existence.  One was discussed in a CRAFTS Newsletter (February, 2002) by Alexander Farnham. At the time, the saw was in possession of Ken Vliet.

This saw is the second specimen with Beaver medallion. Fred Peake sent this review to supplement our presentation and share information with our visitors.  He is a member of Southwest Tool Collectors Association.

Thank you Fred. WK

Model:  Handsaw - 28 inch, teeth filed in progressive pitch.

Catalog record:  Not available.

Comment:

This saw is a rare example of the C. & W. C. Richardson hand saw produced from 1859 through 1865. It is a 28 inch rip saw with a progressive pitch. The pitch is 4 PPI at the heel changing gradually to 5 PPI, with the last 3 inches of the tip at 7 PPI.

The nib is broken off, with only a small portion remaining. The saw was purchased on an E-bay auction and has had no cleaning or restoration. The blade has a dark patina with relatively minor amounts of pitting.  There is no model number stamped on the blade.
