Showing below is an eight-inch W. & C. Johnson open-handled brass backsaw.

William and Charles Johnson were active 1823-1840. Characteristics of this saw lead me to believe it was made some time prior to 1840 when they ceased manufacturing.

There are several things about this saw that catch the eye. First look and you start counting the number of maker’s marks; in all, there are seven.

The bold imprint of W. & C. JOHNSON with PHILA below is on the brass back. I believe this to be a typical mark that appears on the face side of the saw.

Also, on the face side are three other manufacturers’ stamps.

One is in the brass and two are on the handle.
