Making a Hammer Handle

Now you can rasp the neck into an oval shape. Try the handle into the head to see how you like it. If necessary shape it further.

The hand part of the handle is still rectangular.

ONow it is time to cut the wedge slot in the end and shape the handle into an oval shape.

The next picture shows a side view of the handle..

Install the finished handle into the hammer head and wedge it with an appropriate wooden wedge. Then use a steel wedge.

The steel wedge should not go all the way into the end of the handle. You should have to trim off the steel wedge. Do this with a hack saw. Don’t try to grind it off as that will cause burning around the wedge and it will not stay in tight.

Here is what my hammer looks like with its new handle.

You can make you handle as fancy or as plain as you like.
