At a recent meeting of my wood turning club I saw a beautiful platter with a butterfly in the center. I knew I had to make one. And that led to me making 5 of them.
I had a board of silky oak that was just big enough for 5 platters 9” in diameter. I cut the board, then cut the squares round to go onto the lathe. I turned the back of each one the same. Then I turned the frame around the butterfly. It was difficult to decide how to turn all the frames, and yet have them all be different. As you can see they all are different. I don’t know what I would have done if I had to do another one. :>) The first step was to glue a butterfly pattern on each platter.
Then each one had to be wood burned.
Here is a close-up of one.
