Building techniques – The Neck

The cavaquinho building starts with the construction of its neck, which is essentially a work of many small cuts. Before shaping, the pieces are cut and glued, and the bigger part of the material is removed with the help of saws.

It’s better finishing first the tongue-and-groove mortise between the neck and the neck block that, later on, will join the neck with the body. The straight form of the neck still allows supporting square and rulers used to marking.

The work is controlled by a Vernier caliper, according to the dimensions of the real size technical drawing. The fretboard of Amaranth is glued to the neck, taking care to put the pieces in the right position.

One of the most delicate parts is the preparation of the fretboard, because the frets of the cavaquinho are very close, requiring greater accuracy in cutting. To reduce the margin of error, we use a template to guide each cut, ensuring uniform distance and depth.

The frets of the fretboard are installed and trimmed before their union with the body. The whole structure will be shaped with raps and files.
