Wheeler, Madden & Clemson - The Standard

The Standard

This is an example of "The Standard" saw.  This specific model doesn't appear in catalogs available to me -  Monhagen Saw Works, February 1, 1871 Office and Price List of The National Saw Co., April 1, 1895, The Wheeler, Madden & Clemson Mfg. Co.

In the catalog for 1895 "The Standard" model appears, but with much more sophisticated etch and different handle type.  This suggest that the saw presented here was produced prior to 1895.  Since the patent date on the medallion is December 21, 1869, (this date relates to the saw split nuts patent), this saw could not have been made before 1869 and was produced either in 1870 or later, but probably before April 1, 1895.

Catalog record not available.

The Handle:  Beech, two screws and one medallion

Visual inspection:

Blade is in good condition, small pitting blemishes, toe with a nib.  Blade marking is etched and readable.  Handle in good condition, top horn chipped, finish appears to be original however incomplete.  Inside of the hand opening has well preserved finish, probably varnish.
