Wheeler, Madden & Clemson - Butchers' Saw No. 1

 

This is an example of No. 1 Butchers' Saw.

Catalog: 1871 Monhagen Saw Works:

No. 1 (Wheeler, Madden & Clemson).  Best flat back, beech handle, polished edges.  Three brass screws, one embossed.

Note:  The catalog describes this saw as the one produced with beech handle.  Our inspection could not confirm it for this specimen.  We incline to think that the wood used is a Walnut.

The Handle:  Walnut (?), polished edges, three brass screws and split nuts.

The Heel with tension screw.

Visual Inspection:

Blade pitted and stained.  Blade lightly cleaned and oiled.  Handle has a very small amount of original finish.  Chip on top horn.  Wood cracks on both sides at the medallion area.  Steel frame has been cleaned and oiled.
